Na samém konci
temne chodby
v tunelu pod mestem
kde jsem nikdy nebyl
za dlouhou radou vytlucenych
svetel
zmitan pruvanem
a zimnici
potme a poslepu
narazil jsem na zed
z betonu a ze strepu
- na hluboky a ztvrdly
otisk sve tvare.
na opacnem konci
zaslechl jsem s ozvenou
vzdaleny narek
a ja zjistil
ze nejsem tady
ale za stenou
ze nejsem odlitkem
ale formou
ze nejsem uvnitr
ale vne
- jsem zazdenou
zatvrdlou slapotou
hlubokym otiskem me.

Helemaal aan het eind
van een pikdonkere gang
in een tunnel onder de stad
waar ik nooit eerder was
voorbij een lange rij
stukgeslagen lampen
en geslingerd tussen tochtvlaag
en koortsrilling
(op de tast en in den blinde)
stuitte ik op een muur
van beton en scherven
- op een diepe en versteende
afdruk van mijn gezicht...
aan het andere eind
hoorde ik met nagalm
een verre jammerklacht
en ik stelde vast
dat ik hier niet was
maar achter een muur
dat ik geen afgietsel was
maar vorm
dat ik niet binnen stond
maar buiten
- ik was een ingemetselde
versteende voetstap
een diepe afdruk van mezelf.

At the far end
of a pitch dark corridor
in a tunnel under the town
where I'd never been before
past a long row
of smashed-in lamps
and slung between draughty gusts
and fevered shiverings
(groping my way and blinded)
I struck against a wall
of concrete and shards
- against a deep and petrified
impression of my face...
at the other end
I heard the booming warl
of a distant lament
and concluded
I was not here
but standing behind a wall
that I was no plaster-cast
but a form
that I was not standing inside
but outside
- I was a bricked-in
petrified footstep
a deep impression of myself.

The poet J. H. Krchovský (real name, Jiří Hásek), was born on April 22, 1960 in Prague. He lives in Prague and Brno. He has been writing poetry since the late 70's and was one of the most outstanding artists of the Czech underground of the 80's. He is one of the most individual of writers on the contemporary literary scene. in 1998, his collection of works "Poems" was published by the Brno publishing house Host. His grotesque, rhymed poetry returns to the tradition of Czech decadence, with its symbols such as death, pain and frustration wrapped in a choking cloud of alcohol and eroticism. J. H. Krchovský has published a number of volumes: Noci, po nichž nepřichází ráno (1978-1991; Host 1991), Leda s labutí (1992-1996; Host 1997), Dodatky... (1978-1996; Host 1997), Básně (collection of previously published works; Host 1998), Vše nejlepší... (the best of..1978-1997; Maťa 1998), Poslední list (1998-2003; Petrov 2003), Nad jedním světem (2003-2004; Host 2004), Mladost radost (his early works, 1978-1981;Větrné mlýny 2005).
